Adelaide Nutting historical nursing collection, [ca. 1621-1930], [ca. 1621-1900] (bulk).

Documents in the collection, named in honor of Adelaide Nutting, relate to nursing and other medical and public health matters with an emphasis on the poor. The majority of the documents come from France with a few from Germany, Italy, and the United States. Included are diplomas for degrees in medicine, letters, legal documents, government documents, receipts for hospital food and supplies, certificates, accounts, bills, and miscellaneous documents. Of note are a papal bull of Pope Gregory XV, May 8, 1621, granting plenary indulgence and remission of sins to those of the Hospital of St. Francis at Melun, France; a certificate, 1795, issued by the ComiteĢ de Bienfaisance, Section des Droits de l'homme, stating that the bearer has not received his bread card; and an order, 1863, issued by the U.S. War Dept., concerning the employment of women nurses in hospitals during the Civil War. Also, letters, 1854-1900, from Florence Nightingale to Count Strzelecki, Miss Kirkland, Rev. J. Huntley Greene, Rev. A. Bourne, Dr. G.V. Poore, Miss E. Scovil, and others concerning personal and professional nursing matters. Some letters, 1859-1930, by Sidney Herbert, William Clarke, Linda Richards, and Betty Eicke, either to or about Nightingale, are included.
