One ALS (7 p.) to Lord Hobart, statesman and Governor of Madras, marked private and relating to military tactics to be used in capturing Colombo from the Dutch; a collection of 5 letters and mss. (19 p.) relating to captured property in Ceylon, addressed to Henry Dundas; "Average estimate of the annual charges attending the possession of Ceylon under the Dutch Government and of the annual amount of Revenue produced by that Island." (signed P.A. Agnew and transmitted to Henry by Dundas by the Chairman of the East India House, 3 Nov. 1798).

Dundas, Henry, 1742-1811

Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), statesman, was the father of Robert Saunders Dundas, the second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), also a statesman. Henry Dundas was educated at Edinburgh High School and University, before becoming solicitor-general for Scotland in 1766. He was M.P. for Midlothian 1774-1790, except for a few months in 1782, when he sat for Newtown, Isle of Wight.
