First half of album consists of photos of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire: damaged buildings, refugee tent camps, reconstruction, businesses that have reopened in makeshift quarters. Damaged buildings include: Palace Hotel; Dunstan Hotel; Hotel Victoria; Majestic Theater; First Unitarian Church; St. Mary's Cathedral; St. Ignatius College; Call Building; Pacific Union Club; Spreckels Mansion; Ferry Building; City Hall. Businesses in new and/or temporary locations include: Shreve? Pragers; the new Emporium; Wells Fargo? Pauson? Sing Fat Co.; Paul Elder's book shop; Canadian Bank of Commerce. Second half of the album depicts scenes of British Columbia, Niagara, Washington, D.C., and other East Coast locations, and two California scenes: steamer "Tahoe" on Lake Tahoe; train hauling logs in Lamoine. Also includes a copyprint of an 1886 photo by C.S. of a group in Arizona including General Crook and Geronimo.

Biography Charles Derleth, Jr. (1874-1956) received his B.S. degree at the City College of New York in 1894 and his degree in Civil Engineering at Columbia University in 1896. After serving as an instructor at Columbia and Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado, he became Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in 1903. In 1907 he became Dean of the College of Civil Engineering....
