Crystalline bedrock disposal project files, 1981-1984.

Files documenting the board's consideration of a crystalline bedrock repository for hazardous industrial wastes, as required in 1983 amendments to the Waste Management Act of 1980. The repository would consist of minelike chambers set deep in a granite or similar crystalline bedrock formation, with the potential for secure containment far from groundwater resources and "retrievability" for later processing or re-use. In February 1984, the board declared crystalline bedrock disposal unfeasible, citing its experimental nature and the great expense and time that would be needed to test it thoroughly.
