David Cosad's journal of a trip to California by the overland route and life in the gold diggings during 1849-1850 : ms, 1849 Mar. 13-1850 Feb. 20.

Diary describing Cosad's overland journey from New York to Calif. (Mar.-July 1849) with fellow traveler Samuel Cosad and hired hand William Barrett; Cosad's experiences prospecting for gold along the American River, near Coloma (Aug.-Oct.), then employed in San Francisco at various occupations, including masonry and carpentry; and part of his sea voyage back east, beginning in Jan. 1850 on the Steamer California, via Panama, then on a brig bound for New Orleans, where the journal ends. Overland portion includes descriptions of cities, towns, rivers, forts, camps, and encounters with Native Americans. Entry for May 27, 1849 mentions Cosad's measurement of Chimney Rock by using the length of his shadow.
