Journal of a voyage from Newport to the East Indies in the Mount Hope, 1802 Sept. 8-1802 April 29.

Records a voyage made by the trading ship Mount Hope in 1802 and 1803 to transport sugar, coffee, saltpeter, and flour between Newport, R.I. and the Isle of France, now Mauritius. Breese note daily progress of the journey, including the latitudinal and longitudinal position of the ship, wind directions, miles traveled each day, weather conditions, course direction, necessary repairs to the ship, encounters with other vessels on the way, and progress on loading and unloading at the dock. Breese also penned in random thoughts, quotes from well known authors, essays, anecdotes, poems, extracts from periodicals, and comments about people. He was particularly opinionated about the Irish and women.
