This group of photographs, collected by Thomas Goode Jones while an officer in the Ala. State Troops, depicts the state troops encamped at various locations around the state. Shown are the Montgomery Greys at Oak Park, Montgomery, ca.1886; a group of Ala. State Troops officers, including Thomas Goode Jones, at Oak Park; the Second Regiment, Ala. State troops, encamped at Camp Pelham, 1890; a state guard regiment preparing to board a train at Camp Rodes, 1884; and the Second Regiment, Ala. State Troops, on dress parade near Mobile, 1883. The photographs have been glued to 10 by 12 inch mat board. Horgan Photo of Birmingham was the photographer at Camp Pelham. This collection documents the activities and equipment of the Ala. Thomas Goode Jones was born on 1844 Nov. 26 at Macon, Ga. He was educated by tutors, Mongomery, Ala. schools, the schools of Dr. Charles Minor and Gesner Harrison in Virginia, and the Virginia Military Institute. Within months of joining the Confederate Army he rose to the rank of major. Following the war, he served as captain of the Montgomery Greys, Co. A., Second Regiment, Ala. State Troops, and colonel of the Second Infantry Regiment, Alabama State Troops, from 1880 to 1890. Between 1866 and...
