Included are subject files gathered by Counts in the course of writing his book THE CHALLENGE OF SOVIET EDUCATION. These contain translations of articles and speeches; clippings of articles from the U.S. and the Soviet Union; material from the U.S. State Dept.; and printed material. Notes, related correspondence, drafts of chapters, and the final manuscript are included. Also, a transcript of an oral history with Counts (done at Southern Illinois University, 1964) in which he discusses his work, and various changes and problems in education.

George Sylvester Counts was born on December 9, 1889. His BA from Baker University (1911) in classical studies included the study of history, philosophy, and the natural sciences. He taught for two years in two high schools in Kansas and in 1913 went to the University of Chicago (1913-1916) where he was awarded a Ph. D. magna cum laude, in education and social sciences.
