Research papers and correspondence of Allan Nevins, chiefly those pertaining to his work at the Huntington Library. Included research papers on the Civil War, drafts to the third and fourth volumes of the Ordeal of the Union, lectures, and shorthand books kept by his secretary at the Huntington, Mrs. Lillian K. Bean. The correspondence deals chiefly with the publication of the last two volumes in the Ordeal of the Union and was conducted by Mrs. Bean. Also included is correspondence between Allan Nevins and Mrs. Nevins and Mrs. Bean.

Historian, journalist and educator. He attended the University of Illinois where he earned a B. A. 1912 and an M. A. in English, 1913. Nevins moved to New York to work and eventually was made a Professor of History at Columbia University. Wrote numerous biographies and articles on history.
