Matthew D. Thomason diary, 1861 Dec. 27-1863 Sept. 24.

The diary commences with Thomason's entry about his attendance at the Louisiana Annual Conference (presumably a religious conference) held in Alexandria, December 11-16, 1861. He mentions his appointment as an itinerant Methodist minister at Houma and the difficulties he encountered on his trip from Alexandria to Jackson, Mississippi, via New Orleans. Several sermons he presented on his circuit are present in the diary. After March 29, 1862, Thomason provides a daily account of his activities. He records his work among whites and blacks in the vicinity of Houma, Thibodaux, and Berwick Bay, and trips to and from Algiers and Gretna, Louisiana. On April 26 Thomason states his intention to return to his home near Mobile, Alabama. The diary entries following his return to Alabama pertain chiefly to farming activities; trips to various places in Alabama and Georgia to purchase farm commodities; and news about family, friends, and neighbors. Thomason often lists the prices of food, cost of household and farm articles, freight and repair charges, and salaries paid laborers. The loose item is a letter (1828) to Thomason from his wife, Sarah, relating personal news.

From a small beginning in May 1932, the Methodist Crusaders Choir, then with 75 choristers, was hurriedly formed and made its first public appearance at the General Conference Meetings of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It is primarily a hymn-singing choir, and the devoted members feel that the main purpose in their coming together is to spread the gospel message of the Church by means of song.
