Reconstruction era political materials, 1868-1878.

This collection contains a ledger, pamphlets, broadsides, one letter, and a campaign booklet. Included are a ledger of minutes and campaign booklet concerning the candidacy of Reuben F. Kolb, directed at the Republicans of Dallas Co. from the Executive Committee of the Central Council of Democratic and Conservative Party. The majority of items (including Democratic and Republican materials) concern Reconstruction politics and elections and include broadsides and pamphlets titled, "Roll of the Black Dupes and White Renegades," "Law Abiding Democrats to the Front!," "To the Republicans of Dallas County," and "Rooms of the Republican Executive Committee!" The single typescript letter, written by Jasper N. Harvey, discusses how to identify a true Republican as opposed to George H. Craig, Dallas County court judge, and Haney discusses in detail Craig's handling of the Crenshaw case. In this case, Craig let off a white man who had shot a freedman. This collection provides important information concerning both Democrats and Republicans for a period in Alabama history that has been the subject of numerous scholarly debates. The materials provide a valuable source for documenting Alabama's post-war political and social upheaval.
