Letters, 1861 Feb. 1 - 1863 May 2, from Charles S. Stewart to his wife, Julia and other family members. The letters tell of Charles' activities, such as drill marches, transfer of soldiers, and the Confederate victory under Gen. Van Dorn at Fayetteville, Ark. He mentions that on his arrival to Fort Pillow, Tenn., there were two regiments, the 21st and 2nd Ala. Volunteers, also he has to move to Bethel which was about fifteen miles north of Corinth, Miss. Charles mentions that at Evening Camp near the Tennessee River a skirmish had taken place and also at Corinth, Miss. Subsequently, in Mobile, Ala. martial law was declared, all liquor confiscated and the price of provisions regulated by military authority. Bridgadier General Benjamin Butler was in command at Mobile, Ala. At Farmington, Miss. Charles describes a battle as the most impressive display of strategy he has witnessed. He tells of General Van Dorn, Price, Jackson and Gardner's brigade as being participants in the battle. Charles mentions that the food was usually good and a friend, Lieutenant Luther had jaundice. In addition, Charles mentions that the situation at Fort Morgan, Ala. was preparation for attack. The units drill in the morning, drill in battalion or artillery drill at the guns. In the trans-Mississippi area, Charles mentions that the Union forces have made little or no advantages. He asks his wife to continue making him clothes.
