The Berkshire Furnace was built on a branch of Spring Creek in Lower Heidelberg Twp., Pa. by William Bird around 1760. It was part of his estate in 1762. From 1764 to 1790, the furnance was owned by Bird's widow and operated by George Ege (1748-1829) under lease. Evidence suggests that Henry William Stiegel was employed at the furnace in the late 1760s. In 1790 Ege purchased the Berkshire Furnace. From the description of Account books, 1765-1794.
