The collection is composed of 10 maps showing the proposed passage of the canal, along with the location of the locks. Along with the maps are 3 pages of plans, elevations, and sections of the locks and dams. The maps and profiles were projected by Nathan S. Roberts, a civil engineer, and drawn by F. H. Petrie and R. P. Baker.

This board was established by the Ala. legislature in 1830 to oversee improvements to Muscle Shoals and Colbert Shoals in the Tennessee River. Although construction of a canal was completed around 1838, it did not improve some areas above and below the canal which were dangerous to navigate.
