The Governor of Alabama functions to administer the laws of the state. The First Lady functions differ from one administration to another. First Lady Marsha Folsom functioned to foster particular political and economic goals in her position. This series is arranged in four subseries: A. The scheduling files are arranged alphabetically by county, and occupies six cubic ft. B. The master files are arranged alphabetically by subject or by individual or organizational name, and occupies five cubic ft. C. The staff project files are arranged under the staff person(s) responsible, and thereunder are unarranged, and occupies eight cubic ft. D. The Governor's Mansion files contain a schedule of events. It also includes various aspects of information that cover the era of 1979-1994, and occupies two cubic ft. The first two folders of subseries A. Scheduling files, contain speeches and remarks made by Marsha Folsom. Other folders contain invitations to attend or to speak at events, related correspondence, scheduling request forms, travel briefings, and the speeches made by First Lady Marsha Folsom. Some folders also contain photographs, such as the Barbour County folder. She spoke in most counties, and received requests from all counties. Subjects discussed in this subseries include aging and the elderly, child abuse, economic development, education, historic restoration, and others. Subseries B. Master files, contain correspondence, publication of various kinds, including numerous newsletters, serials, and speeches, scheduling request forms, and others. Often subjects are discussed in files with organizational names. For example, drug abuse in discussed in the ABC Board file, as well as elsewhere. A particularly interesting file is the Anniversary file that discussed Alabama's 175th anniversary. Other topics discussed include the arts in Alabama, breast cancer, education and education reform, economic development, first ladies of Alabama, breast cancer, education and educational reform, economic development, first ladies of Alabama, the Governor's Mansion, higher education, human resources, people with disabilities, health, historical preservation and ISTEA grants, Medicaid, mental health, Mercedes-Benz, National Governor's Conference, Southern Governors Association, tourism volunteers, and others. Subseries C. Project files includes correspondence, photos, publications of various kinds, and speeches. It includes such projects as breast cancer awareness and prevention, preserving the First White House of the Confederacy, ACLU cases, family guidance programs, constituent affairs, children, and many others. Of particular interest is a photo of President Clinton and Governor Folsom in SG20438, and visits to various cities and events in SG20440. Subseries D. Governor's Mansion, contains the schedule of events held in the Mansion in 1994, in SG20445, and some historical and various aspects about the Mansion in SG20446.
