Speeches, 1966-1967.

The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is advocating a position on specific issues that is expressed through speeches and addresses to various groups and organizations, and at special events. This series consists of speeches, drafts of speeches, and statements given by Governor Lurleen B. Wallace. The Wallaces made no secret of the fact that Lurleen ran for governor strictly to keep George the de facto governor. Alabama law prohibited a governor from serving consecutive terms. Lurleen Wallace took the initiative to encourage improvement to state health care facilities in the state. Otherwise her speeches and statements echo the sentiments of her husband, George, regarding civil rights issues and state's rights. The speeches in this series include her inaugural address, several addresses to the state legislature, and presentations at Governor's Day celebrations around the state. Her speeches for the dedication of Patrick Henry State Jr. College and the Monroe County Airport were read by Legal Advisor Hugh Maddox due to illness in the Wallace family. Lurleen Wallace was stricken by a return of cancer in 1967 June and died in office the following May. There are no speeches included in this series after June with the exception of a statement issued in Nov. regarding her health.
