Program administrative files, 1941-1955.

This series consists of correspondence, reports, minutes, and handbooks that document the activities and programs of the Public Library Service Division. The records contain interlibrary loan requests from public libraries throughout the state and requests for or information regarding a film on Alabama's libraries entitled Books and People: The Wealth Within. The files trace legislation that would effect library programs. They also document special programs such as those established during World War II and the American Heritage Program in the 1950s. A large portion of the records concern the American Heritage Program from its beginning in 1951 up to 1955. This patriotic program was established by the American Library Association to provide discussion experience with varied types of material and to promote reading and clarification of thinking in regard to the values inherent to American democracy. Groups would meet at public libraries to discuss a particular theme from a select body of literature. These records document the discussion material used by the groups, the topics discussed, and the number of persons who attended the meetings. The minutes of the State Advisory Committee on Youth and Children for the years 1949-1952 are also in this series because Lois Rainer Green, the division's director, was a member of this committee.
