James Foster and family papers, 1829-1904.

Correspondence consists chiefly of personal letters from family members concerning family life, social life, an outbreak of yellow fever in New Orleans, travel in the Eastern United States, education, and affairs on the Hermitage Plantation. Letters of Thomas B. Gaillard comment on student life at Oakland College, Rodney, Mississippi, and at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Business and financial papers include slave bills of sale, a declaration of property owned by Sinah Gaillard prior to her marriage, receipts for medical services, a rent receipt, and a document concerning the settlement of the estate of Sinah Foster. Three bound volumes contain manuscript poetry (1829-1874), and four record books contain entries of the Confederate Memorial Association concerning a Confederate monument in Natchez and listing subscribers to the Confederate Memorial Fund (1888-1889). The collection contains photographs of family members and a paper cut-out of Lincoln.

Isaac Gaillard Foster and John Sanderson Foster were the sons of James Foster, a medical doctor of Natchez, Mississippi. The family resided at Hermitage Plantation near Natchez. Both sons served in the Confederate Army. John S. Foster died of wounds received during the Gettysburg campaign, 1863; Isaac G.
