M.T. Andry and family papers, 1840-1882 (bulk 1858-1879).

The collection consists of primarily personal correspondence, legal documents and business papers. Most of the letters, many of which are in French, are addressed to Rosa Andry from her brothers, Edward C. and Amelius M. Haydel, and include descriptions of various aspects of their participation in the Civil War. The Battle of Shiloh, skirmishes at Camp Beauregard in Feliciana Parish, and the Kentucky campaign are mentioned. Other correspondence includes letters to and from Charles G. Andry, son of Michael T. Andry. Letters from Charles Andrews Johnson, New Orleans attorney and close family friend, concern business matters and his travels to New York, Canada, and Paris. Other letters tell of personal and financial difficulties suffered during the later war years and after the war. In addition to extensive documents relating to the disputed sale of Michael T. Andry's plantation in Saint John the Baptist Parish, the legal papers include a baptismal certificate, a passport, will, a petition to sell slaves, oaths of allegiance, and plat maps showing Andry's property holdings. Business papers include receipts for taxes, goods and services, canceled checks, promissory notes, and travel expenses.
