Benjamin Parke Avery miscellany, 1867-1885.

Consists of personal papers pertaining to Benjamin Parke Avery, including a two-page letter to his wife, Mary A. Fuller Avery, in which he describes a train ride taken on the unfinished Central Pacific Railroad with friends Charles Crocker and Leland Stanford. Contains material relating to his death, including a typescript of a poem by Ina Coolbrith, an account of Avery's funeral, and funeral remembrance cards. Includes published articles by and about Avery, along with biographical research on him, which include notes from the National Archives written by Alice L.W. Erickson, Jan. 1948.

Avery was a prominent Calif. newspaperman and pioneer born in New York City. He established and ran the Hydraulic Press and, with a partner, the Appeal. He served as state printer, 1861-1863. He was the editor of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin, and of the Overland Monthly, 1872-1874. He also served as United States Minister to the Chinese Imperial Court, 1874-1875.
