Administrative files, 1959-1963.

The governor is the chief executive officer of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of executive decisions and actions. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor John Patterson. It contains correspondence, reports, pamphlets, publications, telegrams, and other material regarding the activities of the numerous state departments and agencies. Among the state agencies and organizations that reflect significant attention in the Governor's records are the departments of Conservation, Education, and Pensions and Security. In addition, there is material reflecting the racial tensions of the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S. and particularly in Alabama. Included in this material are court opinions regarding Birmingham's practice of illegal school segregation and Alabama's unwillingness to reapportion its legislative districts as required by its Constitution. There is also correspondence and other material relating to Lawrence Dunbar Reddick, an acquaintance of Martin Luther King, Jr. who was fired from his teaching post at Alabama State University for allegedly inciting some students to violence and for alleged communist activities.
