The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the extraditing of criminals. This process may also be referred to as requisition and involves either a request from the Governor of Alabama for the return of criminals who have escaped to other states or a request to the Governor of Alabama for the extradition of criminals found in Alabama. The series consists of a Bill of Indictment dated 1818 charging Weldon Easley with the crime of mayham. This charge came as the result of a fight between Easley and Lindsey Sheets, in which Sheets was blinded. In addition to this bill are two signed statements as to the validity of the indictment, and a statement by Lewis Arthur in 1820 claiming that Easley fled to Alabama following the crime. Also contained in the series is a document signed by Governor John Clark of Ga. establishing the authenticity of the statements and the authority of those who signed them.
