General ledgers, 1950-1964.

The Board of Corrections was created in 1953 by Ala. Act, 202, p. 276 [1953] to replace the Dept. of Corrections and Institutions. Its function was to control and operate convict and penal institutions in the state. This series consists of general ledgers which were produced each fiscal year documenting funds generated and spent for the operation of prisons, penal forms and other convict industries. The ledgers are divided into categories covering, for example, inventories of materials and supplies, equipment valuation, and industrial, agricultural, livestock and dairy operations. The data was used to produce an annual financial report for the Governor's office. However, these reports were not prepared for FY 1950-1954. A quadrennial report listing only additions and betterments and equipment expenditures were produced for these years.
