Out-of-state parole and probation supervision files, 1941-[ongoing].

According to Ala. Code 15-22-1 [1975] "states that are party to a compact shall be competent to permit any person convicted of an offense within a state and placed on probation or released on parole to reside in any other state party to this compact while on probation or parole." The receiving state assumes supervision duties of these individuals. These files may contain any or all of the following types of documents: correspondence concerning the individual between the parole officer, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, the sending authority, and the parolee or probationer; investigation requests; monthly supervisor reports; violation reports; orders or release and conditions of parole; transfer requests; certificates of pardon with restoration of civil and political rights; reports of pre-sentence investigation; supervision cards; progress and conduct reports; and a chronological history of parole/probation supervision. Included in these records are materials created and maintained by the governor's office as he was empowered to grant pardons, paroles, and probations prior to the approval of Constitutional Amendment 38 in July 1939 which transferred the granting of pardons, paroles, and probations from the governor (except in cases involving the death sentence) to the legislature.
