Alabama State Memorial, Vicksburg National Military Park project files, 1948-1951.

These project files document the planning, production, and dedication of the Alabama State Memorial located at the Vicksburg National Military Park, Vicksburg, Miss. The memorial is entitled "The Death Stand of Alabama Troops" and commemorates the seige of Vicksburg. The Ala. Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) commissioned the monument and the state Legislature funded the project. This series consists of correspondence between the Building Commission, sculptor Steffen Thomas, State Archivist Marie Bankhead Owen, UDC members, and various supply companies. The files include the project contract between the UDC and Thomas, blueprints of the Vicksburg site and the memorial, specifications, newspaper clippings concerning the work, and various photographs of the monument, the sculptor, and members of the UDC. A replica of the memorial is on display in the lobby of the Dept. of Archives and History, Montgomery, Ala.
