This 250 page journal describes the siege of Paris from September 18, 1870 to February 12, 1871. It reports on the establishment of the Paris Commune which lasted from March to May of 1871. It describes the split in French politics and society between the monarchists led by General Louis-Jules Trochu and republican supporters of the Commune led by Auguste Blanqui and Gustave Flourens.

Jules Guex (1839-1915) was a Swiss national who was caught in the German siege of Paris in 1870-1871. He and his wife helped to organize a Swiss ambulance in the Collège Chaptal.
