José de la Borda papers, 1737-1837.

Includes certificates of nobility, 1737; 10 briefs of Pope Clement XIII to Borda granting him the privilege of hearing Mass in his house; a letter to Viceroy Bucareli from Borda, c. 1775, concerning the draining of the Quebradilla (Zacatecas) mine; a certificate, 1826-27; and estate documents, 1789-1837. It also includes the separately cataloged inventory of jewels given by Borda to the Santa Prisca church.

The Borda family was among the most important mining families in Mexico at this time. They made large donations to the Church and various charities. Borda was a very successful engineer, and, according to Humboldt, was instrumental in restoring production in the enormously rich Zacatecas group.
