Appleton and Co. are bringing out six of the Dukesborough Tales and will republish the rest if the first succeed); ALS from Johnston to S. [Symond?] E. Jones, 1893 Nov 6, (returns sketch and has signed it); and 1 signed note from Johnston to Henry [Pont?], 1892 Dec. 19 (thanking him for a favor). There is also a photograph of Johnston inscribed by him to Edward Windsor Kemble.

Richard Malcolm Johnston was an author, lawyer, and educator. He was born near Pawellton, Georgia on "Oak Grove" plantation. He was law partners with Eli W. Baxter in Sparta, Georgia. In 1844, Johnston married Mary Frances Mansfield. He was elected chair of rhetoric and belles-lettres at the University of Georgia in 1857; he remained in Athens until 1861.
