The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. This series documents the speeches of Governor Jim Folsom and his wife Marsha. Materials found in the speeches include press releases, and a biographical sketch of Jim Folsom in SG20420. Jim and Marsha Folsom discussed agriculture, economic development and industrial development, specifically the location of a Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama, education and education reform, including funding for education and the inequitableness of funding for education, rural electric cooperatives, conservation and the environment, and tourism. In addition, Marsha Folsom spoke regarding child advocacy and the diagnosis and prevention of breast cancer. The series also documents the research that went into those speeches. Materials found in the research files include state and federal publications of various types, leaflets, pamphlets, clippings, newsletters, memos, and two videotapes. Both videotapes came from outside Alabama. There is also a short biography of Helen Keller in the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation materials which may be found in SG20425.
