The Advocate was an irregularly published newsletter by the Department. It contained excerpts from professional literature; news of workshops, conferences, special events, programs, grants awarded, departmental changes, and regional activities; notes from the Director and other staff; occasional student poems and cartoons; obituaries; and profiles of personnel, new staff and Board members, and retirees. Illustrated by photographs, the newsletter reflected the activities and interests of the Department and some of the issues which affected it.
