First draft of the preface to the novel, in which Conrad explains his approach to writing. Although it appeared as an afterword to the novel in its first, serialized publication, it was suppressed from publications in book form until 1914. Accompanied by a photostat of a letter from Conrad to John Quinn [s.d.] about the manuscript and an envelope inscribed by Conrad.
