Daniel Murray Cheston was born on 23 February 1843 in West River, Md. During the Civil War Cheston served in the Army as an acting medical cadet (1862-1864) attached to Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia. He received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1864 and set up private practice in Philadelphia, where he became a Resident Physician to Episcopal Hospital (1864-1865) and a Physician to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (1865-1885).
