Charles Frederick Winslow letter book and miscellany : ms, 1849-1873.

Letter book with copies of 24 letters from Winslow to relatives and friends, Apr. 17-Oct. 19, 1849, describing Winslow's journey from Nantucket to San Francisco via Panama. Includes detailed description of time spent in Panama, as well as several letters written after his arrival in San Francisco. Topics mentioned include whaling, wages, slavery, lumber, shipping, finance, and real estate. Several letters are to Winslow's wife, Lydia. In addition to the letter book, there are four documents: a land indenture, a letter of introduction, a personal letter to his wife, and what appears to be an excerpt from a travel diary. Also includes a slip of paper containing genealogical notes on the Winslow family, stamped Feb. 18, 1949.
