The governor is the chief executive officer of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of executive decisions and actions. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor James Folsom. It contains correspondence, reports, pamphlets, publications, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and other material documenting activities in numerous state agencies, developments in the legislature, and events affecting the state. Some state agencies represented in the series include the State Highway Dept., the State Planning and Industrial Development Board, the Dept. of Conservation, the State Docks Dept., the Board of Pardons and Paroles, the Dept. of Public Health, and the Dept. of Pensions and Security. Labor strikes are covered in the files of the Dept. of Labor. Correspondence in the files document Alabamians requesting assistance in legal matters and with pensions. The files also contain recommendations for county jobs. The scrapbooks in the series consist of clippings about the governor, the legislature and Alabama politics. The files also reflect the rise of racial tensions during Folsom's administration. Public opinion, both local and on a national level, can be found on several issues. Events covered include school integration in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Montgomery bus boycott, and Autherine J. Lucy's entrance and expulsion from the University of Alabama. Incidences of racial violence and Ku Klux Klan activity are noted in the files. In addition, the ways in whcich other states handled integration are presented.
