The bulk of the collection contains letters, petitions, and affidavits concerning the desertion of Timothy T. White from the Confederate Army, his subsequent arrest for selling free blacks as slaves and possession of counterfeit money, the claim by C.Y. Savage for the return of his money paid to White for the slaves, and the judge's ruling for White's heirs after his death in 1864 (9 items). Correspondents in this case include V.A. Haynes, James A. Cross, F.H. Cobb, Alexander Donnan, Samuel Gibbs French, William Robertson, Judge W.T. Joynes, E.B. Branch, John H. Gayle, and David May. A second group of papers in this collection consist of receipts to Dr. J.C. Bragg, Amelia County, for coal, hogs, and bacon supplied to the Confederate Army; receipts for payment of his taxes with corn, wheat, molasses, potatoes, peas and beans; and a receipt from J.R. Anderson and Co. for delivery of iron to Dr. J.C. Bragg. There are two receipts to the estate of W.A. Bragg for payment of taxes with corn. A third group contains a certificate for bonds issued to Green Hill and receipts to his estate paid by David May for land taxes in Dinwiddie County. Three warrants on the treasury of the Confederate States were issued to M.E. Price by James G. Paxton, Lynchburg. John P. May received a letter in 1860 from the Ames Manufacturing Company concerning the price and availability of swords. John Gibson wrote to David May in 1861 about a runaway slave, Susan. David May wrote to John J. Blackstone enclosing a memorandum from Richard Henry Baker, Jr. about the estate of General T.H. Bayly at Mt. Custis. May was chosen in 1866 to represent Petersburg for the Freedman's Bureau. Three certificates for bonds, plus subsequent assignments, were issued to B.B. Arnold, Baughman and Richards, and A.W. Daley in 1864. In 1868, William Moore wrote to General Henry A. Wise requesting information about collecting a bill from Mrs. Perkins' agents.
