"The Attorney General's Office represents the state before all federal and state courts in all cases which Alabama is a party or has an interest and is legal representative for all state, county, and municipal officers." (Alabama Government Manual, p. 12 [1982]). The attorney general or the governor may retain attorneys or counsellors to assist the attorney general in the conduct of an investigation. (Ala. Code, Chapter 25, Article 4, Section 861 [1923]). These attorneys are given a commission as a special assistant to the attorney general. (Ala. Code, Chapter 25, Article 4, Section 863 [1923]). This series consists of a bound volume of statements taken from the members of Company M, Tuscaloosa, Alabama National Guard and compiled by Judge Horace C. Wilkinson, Assistant Attorney General. The statements relate to the lynching of Willie Beard and are in transcript form. The lynching of Beard was related to the murders of mine worker John Northcutt and National Guardsman Private James Morris during the United Mine Workers strike at Nauvoo, Walker County, Alabama in 1920-1921.
