A History of Montgomery in Pictures photograph collection, [ca.1854-1962].

This collection consists of 274 photographs of various scenes of Montgomery, Ala., ca.1854-1962. The prints vary in size and most of the photographs are photocopies of originals. The photographs were used by the Society of Pioneers of Montgomery in a book they published entitled A History of Montgomery in Pictures, ca.1962. The photographs depict Montgomery buildings, including residences, hotels, city buildings, courthouses, churches, and the Capitol. Street scenes of buildings and street activities are well documented. Methods of transportation from horse and buggy, trolley cars, buses, and steamboats are shown. Most of the photographs show the development of Dexter and Commerce streets from the mid-nineteenth century until 1962. Court square is particularly well documented. Other types of documentation include maps of the state and city, newspaper stories of important Montgomery events, the cotton industry and trade, fairs, parades, political events, firemen and fire equipment, activity on the riverfront, military companies, Camp Sheridan, the city race track, and various industries.
