Defense plans, 1940-1941 [state publication].

This series consists of defense plans. Defense Plan Number 1, marked confidential, was prepared for the purpose of planning for the interior defense of the state and for a military force in case of a national or state emergency when no other forces were available or considered adequate. Included are the Plan, a list of selected industries, utilities, and public developments, by city (compiled by the State Planning Commission); an intelligence survey; transportation plans available from the Highway Dept.; a recapitulation showing station lists, concentration points, shelter, and transportation; maps of installations vital to industry, concentrations, transportation shelters, railway nets, airports, radio stations, and headquarters, stations, and areas. The objective of the disaster defense plan was to bring together state and local agencies and the American Red Cross in the event of an emergency. The Adjutant General was directly responsible to the Governor and would be assisted by the Directors of Public Safety, the Highway Dept., Public Health, and Public Welfare, a representative of the Agricultural Extension Service and the Red Cross, and Military Dept. Personnel. Included are discussions of the Plan, situations to be considered, a list of state agencies to carry out the Plan, and inventories of supplies. Exhibits contain a plan of cooperation between the State and the Red Cross; lists of State Guard companies, commanding officers, and location; station lists and number of highway patrolmen, by county; amateur radio stations, by city and by name of operator and address; a recapitulation of facilities, including transportation available and location of armories, by county; names of Civilian Conservation Camps, by county and by post office, number, location, and telephone exchange; and a map showing facilities, including airports in each county. The series illustrates the Department's responsibility in planning for an coordinating the defense of the state, especially before the involvement in World War II.
