This section of New York State was originally known as the Massachusetts Purchase under the ownership of Robert Morris who in 1801 conveyed it to the State of Connecticut (Connecticut Tract) and to Sir William Pulteney (Pulteney Tract). Upon the death of Pulteney's daughter, Henrietta, in 1808, it came into the possession of her cousin Sir John Lowther Johnstone of England.
