In a letter mentioning the fighting around Vicksburg, Kendall writes to Edward Lutter; "We are in camp 2 miles south of the city and are doing picket duty... There is a report that the rebels are crossing the Black River. ...do you Think you could use your influence any to get a friend a commission in a red skined regiment..."
