Letters, manuscripts, and documents pertaining to Rhode Island, the bulk of which date from 1638 to 1840. Subjects include Colonial, Revolutionary, and Federal history; trade; shipping; government; and politics. There are eight letters and documents by Roger Williams, a letter signed by George Washington, and large groups of papers for Benjamin Bourne, Benjamin and Henry Fry, the Providence-Norwich Turnpike Society, the Washington Insurance Company, the Greene and Turner families.
