Charles Pettit (1736 – September 4, 1806) was an American lawyer, merchant, and politician from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He served as a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Confederation Congress from 1785 to 1787. Born near Amwell in Hunterdon County in the Province of New Jersey, Pettit received an English education. Joseph Lawrence (b. 1741) was a merchant captain from Flushing, now a neighborhood in modern-day Queens, N.Y. His brother Effingham Lawrence commanded the brigantine Audrey, built by Joseph's employer Samuel Townsend prior to the American Revolution. Another brother, John L. Lawrence (b. 1731) may be the John who appears in the collection. Joseph's son, also named Effingham Lawrence, was a judge in Queens County in the early 19th century.
