Leidy, Joseph, 1823-1891

Philadelphia-born naturalist. Leidy studied medicine and anatomy and received the degree of M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1844. He died in 1891 recognized as the foremost American anatomist of his time. Among many interests, parasitology had been a favorite study of Leidy. The Committee on Lectures of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was first appointed in January 1864. It was charged with the oversight of a lecture program in surgical pathology funded as part of the agreement made between the College and Thomas D. Mütter in 1858-1859. The committee was empowered to name each lecturer who would provide a course of at least ten lectures annually for a three-year period.
