Charles Roos and family papers, 1825-1933.

Papers of a family prominent in the business, social, and pioneer life of New Ulm (Minn.). They include financial records and other data on the Globe [Flour] Mills Company, the German Land Association of Minnesota, and the New Ulm Turnverein; family correspondence, partly in German, containing information on the 1862 Dakota Conflict, mail service to New Ulm, criticism of the conduct of the Civil War, and the collection of information about early New Ulm for historical articles in local newspapers; account books of the Neu Ulm Pionier and of Charles Roos's cigar business; and minutes of meetings and other papers of the Roller Mill Company, the Nordlicht Publishing Company, the Enterprise Club, and other New Ulm organizations.

Charles Flandrau was born in New York, passed the bar in 1851 and joined his father's law firm. In 1853 he moved to Traverse des Sioux, Minnesota to practice law. He served on the Territorial Council of Minnesota, in the Minnesota Constitutional Convention, and on the territorial and state supreme courts. He was named U.S. agent for the Sioux in 1856. After serving in the Union Army from 1862 to 1864 he took up the practice of law for a year in Nevada before returning to Minnesota. F...
