Letter describing Battle of Queenston, 1816.

A lengthy letter to General James Wilkinson describing the Battle of Queenston. The letter provides a detailed description of the battle and attempts to explain why the state militia would not cross the Niagara River to assist the regular U.S. Army in the attack. The last two pages of the letter discuss the gubenatorial election in New York State, in which Stephen Van Rensselaer was a candidate.

James Wilkinson was born in Maryland and served as an officer in the American Revolution. In 1783 he settled in Kentucky, where he engaged in politics, land speculation, and trade.
