Letter book, 1851-1855.

This book contains transcripts of official letters to and from Governor Lazarus W. Powell during his term in office. Included is a letter from Governor Powell to Governor Joseph Wright of Indiana, in which Powell questions Wright's refusal to return a fugitive from justice to Kentucky and describes Indiana's legal and constitutional duty to do so; and Wright's response, in which he agrees to return the fugitive, but explains his interpretation of the law. Also included is a letter from Governor Powell to James Guthrie, offering him the United States Senate seat resulting from the death of Henry Clay; and Guthrie's response, expresssing his gratitude but declining the offer.
