A collection of personal diaries and other material, including papers from Pruyn's tenure as chancellor. Included are eleven volumes of personal diaries, 1851-1877; seven volumes of personal diaries written while in Europe, 1846-1875; a personal diary for the years 1830-1832; personal memoranda book while Chancellor, 1862-1874; four small pocket diaries, 1853, 1855-1857; a letterbook of official letters as Chancellor, 1862-1874, and a small pocket volume containing two speeches given by Pruyn in 1825 and 1826, in Pruyn's hand.

Pruyn was admitted to the New York bar (1831) and practised law in Albany. He was later director of the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad Company (1835-1845), and a trustee of the Mutual Life Insurance Company. Rockwell was a graduate of Yale University (1822) and practised law in Norwich, Connecticut. He later served in the Connecticut senate (1839) and the U.S. Congress (1845-1849).
