Artemas Wheeler was born July 5, 1795 in Barre, Vermont. Originally from Grafton, Mass., his father Gardner, and uncle Dodge, were among the earliest settlers of Barre. In (or around) 1809 Artemas was sent to Grafton, Mass. to live with his grandfather, Jonathan Wheeler. He attended nearby Leicester Academy and continued his studies there at least through 1813.
