J. Thomas Tanner, Jr. papers, 1869-1980.

The manuscript group consists primarily of diaries kept by Tanner from 1929 to 1980, which include handwritten entries, numerous news clippings and political cartoons, letters, other ephemera, and some photographs. The earliest items include family photographs, an autograph album (1882), and store ledgers kept by Tanner's father in Garfield (1889-1892). There are also photographs of Red Cross ambulances during World War I, a group picture of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at LSU in 1908, and a panoramic view of the old LSU campus. Diary entries pertain to Tanner's career, social life, travel, household and farm expenses; events in Shreveport and northwest Louisiana; LSU news; politics, including Tanner's support of Huey P. Long, Long's radio programs (1929-1935), and Long's death; race relations; the oil industry; religious topics and the First Baptist Church in Shreveport; the end of Prohibition; and economic developments during the Depression.

James Thomas Tanner, Jr., attorney, banker, and public servant, was born May 24, 1885, in Garfield (Caddo Parish), Louisiana. He received an undergraduate degree in 1908 and a law degree in 1911, both from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
