New Amsterdam records and Common Council minutes, 1647-1843.

Collection is comprised of 136 bound volumes and one matted folio of manuscripts. These records document the history of New York from the Dutch colonial period, 1647 through 1834. Included are original Dutch manuscripts (the New Amsterdam Papers) with their English translations, Common Council minutes, ordinances, deeds, conveyances, and related public records. Most of the materials have been microfilmed and due to their fragile condition, the originals are restricted. The volumes vary in size. All of the translated records were done by Edmund B. O'Callaghan, circa 1850, author and editor of New York History texts. O'Callaghan was appointed by the Common Council.

New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch in 1625 and quickly grew into a center of commerce between North America and Europe. In 1664, the British seized control of the island from Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant, and renamed it New York City. In 1686, British Governor Thomas Dongan received a royal charter for the city.
